The Anatomy of the Perfect Smoothie Bowl
So many of you have been asking about how to make a smoothie bowl! I believe that the art of a good smoothie bowl is all about making it as THICK as possible so you can load it with toppings and eat it with a spoon. Here are some of my tips to making an ultra-thick, totally nourishing smoothie to form the base of your smoothie bowl!
AVOCADO – Avocado makes your smoothie super thick! Don’t be afraid, it makes it super creamy and delicious, and I promise it won’t taste like guacamole :)
FROZEN BANANA – Frozen banana, or any frozen fruit for that matter, makes a world of difference. I love using Acai or Dragonfruit frozen packets and tons of frozen berries, too!
COCONUT CREME - Get an organic can of coconut milk (light or regular) and put it in the fridge over night. Use this amazing creme in the smoothie as a base! It will make it so thick and incredibly decadent!
NUTS / NUT BUTTER - Get super nutty! Add a handful of cashews or pecans or almonds to your high-speed blender or 2 Tablespoons of nut butter to help thicken up your shake!
CACAO MAGIC - Add Philosophie Cacao Magic + Superfood Blend to your smoothie to create an absolutely divine smoothie that tastes like the most delicious dairy-free chocolate ice cream ever!
TONS OF ICE! - Sometimes I’ll make coconut water or coconut milk ice cubes, other times I’ll use leftover smoothies or even liquid E3 Live to make ice cubes. Pop those in your blender to make a super refreshing smoothie base for your smoothie bowl.
If you’re still not exactly sure how to make a perfectly thick smoothie, here’s a simple recipe for a delicious smoothie bowl base!
Gather This:
- 8oz coconut milk, canned and stored in fridge for a few hours
- 2 frozen bananas
- 1/2 avocado
- 1/2 dragonfruit or acai frozen packet
- 1/3 Cup frozen pineapple
- 1 Cup kale and spinach (fresh or frozen)
- 1 Tablespoon green dream coconut butter
- 1 handful cashews
- 1 Tablespoon Green Dream Superfood + Protein Blend
- 1 Tablespoon Berry Bliss Superfood + Protein Blend
- 1 Tablespoon Berrybee Manuka Honey
Do This:
Add all of the ingredients to a high-powered blender and blend until smooth. Definitely feel free to swap out any of the ingredients in the recipe above for other fruits and veggies, but be sure to include some of the ingredients from the tips list to make it uber-thick and shake-like.
Once you’ve created a thick and delicious smoothie, pour it into a bowl. We absolutely love the adorable heart-shaped bowls made by Breakfast Criminals, which you can find on Amazon and will also be available on our website very soon! Once your smoothie is in your bowl of choice, load it up with your favorite toppings like fresh fruit, cacao nibs, seeds, nuts, coconut flakes, dried fruit, or bee pollen. I love to take the opportunity to really connect with this nourishing treat by making it as yummy and gorgeous as possible! Once your smoothie has toppings, you’re ready to IN JOY it with a spoon and a straw!
It truly is the perfect treat because it is so easy to make but also feels like a trip to the self-serve yogurt shop! In fact, my kids think this of smoothie bowls as ice cream, which is perfect because they love eating them and I know that they are getting wholesome nourishment with every spoon and straw-full.
